RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment Joining Information:

Timings: 

1/2 day training + skills assessment = 09:30 - 17:00

Skills assessment only = 13:30 - 17:00

 

What to bring: 

  • Summer: Warm jumper/ jacket, sunglasses, suncream, cap
  • Winter: warm clothing, including a hat, gloves etc
  • Non-marking footwear - i.e. sailing boots / trainers
  • Lifejacket (150N) or Buoyancy aid (50N) - if you have one, otherwise we will provide this
  • Wet weather gear - we have light wet weather gear for your to borrow if required. 
  • Water / Drink for on the boat
  • Money for lunch / drinks @ Lake Yard Club
  • RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate 
  • RYA Powerboat Logbook or Instructor handbook if you have one. 

Assessment / What to expect:

  • Background theory knowledge assessment
  • Practical skills assessment (similar to the Powerboat level 2 direct assessment)

All / many items within the RYA Powerboat level 2 syllabus will be assessed. Please refer to the RYA Powerboat logbook (G20) for further details. 

It is expected that all candidates should be able to demonstrate a level of proficiency in each subject being assessed. Therefore the candidate should be able to explain the subject in great depth, including background theory and practical demonstration. 

 

"An example would be IRPCS. The candidate can explain and demonstrate correct action to be taken to avoid collisions with other craft, principally rules 5, 7, 8, 89, 12-19."

RYA Powerboat Instructor Skills Assessment Pre-Requisites: 

  • RYA Powerboat level 2 certificate

  Possible Assessment Outcomes: 

  • PASS
  • ACTION PLAN - If for any reason you do not quite meet the criteria set by the RYA, then the outcome may be that you receive an action plan. This will be written and give clear guidance on the items you are required to complete prior to being issued with your Powerboat Skills Assessment Pass. You will always receive a S.M.A.R.T. action plan (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely) that will be discussed and agreed with you. Example actions are:- Improving powerboat handling skills, Improve background knowledge etc.  
  • FAIL - Hopefully this is unlikely, so don't even think about it!
